Question for you – how many living languages exits throughout the world today?

100? – 500? – 1,000? – well actually the answer is of over 7,000! With 90% of these languages used by less than 100,000 people. Indeed, over a million people converse in 150 – 200 languages and 46 languages have just a single speaker!

Did you know that most languages belong to a family? – a ‘family’ being a group of languages that can be shown to be genetically related to each other, the most prominent of these being the Indo-European family as seen below in an excellent infographic by illustrator Minna Sundberg.

Old World Language Families

The world’s most widely spoken languages by number of native speakers are English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Hindu, Russian, Portuguese, Bengali. Japanese, German and French. Of these the five most difficult to learn are said to be Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic and Cantonese.

So why am I twittering on about different languages? – well I really want to concentrate on Russian, the official language within the Russian Federation, which has a population of over 140 million people. In Russia, Old Cyrillic was first written in the early Middle Ages the shapes later being changed by Peter the Great and then finally defined in 1918 to what it is today.

Well great news, the Russian Federation has come to Primasonics International in the shape of our new agents Techbridge Ltd. They have kindly translated our Acoustic Cleaner brochure into Russian along with other key technical documents and here is the result!
