There has been much excitement lately concerning the nightly meteorite 'show'. Personally I'm never able to stay up that late and those who did in my locality did not obtain such a good show as other areas. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speed. The majority are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all of them disintegrate and never hit the Earth's surface. What we have seen lately has been intense or unusual meteor showers known as meteor outbursts and meteor storms. These may produce greater than 1,000 meteors an hour.
